Early Modern Fireworks

On the first day of her visit to Kenilworth Castle in 1575, Queen Elizabeth was greeted with a spectacular show of fireworks, including a “blaze of burning darts, flyign to and fro, stars corruscant, streams and hail of fiery sparks, lightnings of wildfire on water and land, flight and shot of thunderbolt.” Jim Ellis is currently working on a study of gardens and poetry that begins with an account of the entertainment staged for Elizabeth at Kenilworth.
